If you take a bunch of escort missions and just sit in a system, you can even cap a mid level ship right away. So all you have to do is jump 4 systems away to Sol or Merak and sell your shield gen, lasers, buy a couple bunk rooms, laser rifles, and you can basically start capturing right off the bat. In addition, you are able to take escort missions right away. You get an escort mission right off the bat as the second intro mission.
